Businesses investing in corporate travel will be looking to Travel Management Companies (TMCs) to take the lead in navigating the challenges posed by the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

This is according to a new survey by the UK travel association ABTA, which has underlined the importance of all organisations in the corporate travel space taking the time to prepare for the introduction of the new Europe-wide data protection laws.

GDPR will come into force on May 25th 2018 and will introduce stringent new regulations on obtaining explicit consent when it comes to storing and using sensitive personal data, with those falling foul of the laws set to be hit with substantial fines.

The new ABTA survey revealed that this legal change will prompt many businesses to work more closely with TMCs to protect their staff's data when travelling for work, with 28 per cent saying they will be looking to employ the services of a TMC and ensure all travel is booked only with agreed suppliers within the travel policy.

When asked what criteria they used when selecting a TMC, 90 per cent of managers said it was important or very important that they could be confident their chosen TMC partner had the correct data management processes and systems.

Meanwhile, 32 per cent said they were unsure about what steps they could take to protect the information of those travelling for business, further underlining the significant opportunity for TMCs to step up and take the lead on this issue.

Susan Deer, senior solicitor at ABTA, said: "With just over three months to go until GDPR becomes law, it is incredibly important that all companies have adjusted their working practices to take account of their new obligations.

"Properly-prepared TMCs have an incredibly important role to play with businesses looking to them to help protect their data - and it also creates a great business opportunity too."
