As economies around the world continue to grow and expand, we are seeing the emergence of new business travel markets that present exciting opportunities for the managed travel industry.

Corporate travel spending in India, for example, is rising apace, while China is expected to overtake the US to become the world's biggest market for business travel as early as 2015.

Now, it seems that Brazil could be one of the next big destinations for travel management companies to look to for expansion, with figures indicating strong growth this year.

According to the 2014 International Travel Management Study by AirPlus, the country is among the most optimistic in the world when it comes to the volume of work-related trips taking place.

Some 60 per cent of travel managers in Brazil are anticipating more business travel in 2014, which is an increase on the 48 per cent expecting to see a rise in last year's study.

They are also concerned over the possibility of rising costs, with 67 per cent forecasting higher business travel costs in 2014 compared to last year and only three per cent predicting a reduction.

The AirPlus findings seem to correlate with research by the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), whose latest outlook for Brazil foresees a 12.4 per cent rise in business travel spending this year, followed by a 5.9 per cent increase in 2015.

It notes that since 2000, spending on corporate travel in the country has tripled, causing its industry to move up to the eighth largest in the world.

If Brazil can get its economic growth back on track following a slump ahead of the Fifa World Cup, it may even rise above South Korea and France in the rankings some time in the next decade, the GBTA claims.

So for travel management companies, Brazil could be a lucrative target for expansion, but those that do enter this fast-growing market must ensure they have the right travel technology in place to support their ambitions.
