Dealing with business travel security concerns: practical steps for TMCs

With an ever-growing number of security threats facing the global travel sector, it has never been more important for Travel Management Companies (TMCs) to take a proactive approach to dealing with these issues.

A recent report from the Association of Corporate Travel Executives and American Express Global Business Travel has demonstrated that many in the corporate travel sector are already taking steps to deal with these issues - and that TMCs could potentially be playing a bigger role than they already are.

Of the 170 corporate travel buyers polled for the report, it was revealed that 83 per cent are investing in traveller location technology as a means of addressing these concerns, while 79 per cent are working to provide more proactive safety communication to travellers.

Other key tools include greater investment in safety training, emergency check-in technology, safety and security services provided by TMCs, and detailed emergency action plans.

It was also revealed that 45 per cent of travel managers would like to see more support from their TMC, with 40 per cent saying they would like to provide more safety training and 38 per cent wanting to introduce emergency check-in technology. 

However, the cost of this increased support from TMCs was cited as a potential barrier, as was their own lack of knowledge about available products and services - suggesting that close dialogue between travel managers and TMCs might help to address these issues.

Evan Konwiser, vice-president for American Express Global Business Travel's Digital Traveler offering, said: "Proactivity is the key to success in duty of care, and there are some turnkey ways to make security a priority with travellers and stakeholders.

"It may be as simple as putting a quarterly meeting on the calendar for HR, IT, compliance and senior leadership to discuss the organisation's travel policies and emergency preparedness."
