As habits among new generations of business travellers shift, Travel Management Companies are under growing pressure to update their approach to technology accordingly.

This is according to Dr Martin Buck, senior vice president of the trade fair company Messe Berlin, who told Tnooz that tech usage is becoming more prominent as Generation Y and Z employees start to travel more for business reasons.

The shift is leading companies from across the travel sector to push forward tech innovations aimed at tackling a number of key challenges and responding to changing consumer demands. The Germany-based company Conichi, for example, has launched email notification for check-ins, while Belgium's Masai Mobility Community has created proprietary technology and solutions to better connect concierges and service providers.

Airbnb, meanwhile, is starting to push itself more aggressively as a business travel accommodation option, with Acomodeo is also developing a compare-and-book platform specifically for the serviced apartments sector, with a specific focus on business travellers.

Dr Buck said the momentum of this recent progress is unlikely to change any time soon, suggesting that business travellers could be among the earliest adopters of drone-taxis, ordered via app, as they have considerable experience of frequent travel with tight schedules and may respond well to the added convenience this would offer.

This adoption of new technology is likely to become ever more widespread as tech-savvy younger employees continue to supplant their older counterparts in the business world.

The expert said: "Travel managers and business travel agents are having to take on new roles and learn new skills, beyond their established organising and servicing functions. Employees expect them to be up to date with the latest leisure travel tech trends and to find a way to bring these into the corporate domain."
