Travel Management Companies (TMCs) are seeing British companies becoming increasingly aware of the numerous benefits that business travel offers to their organisations.

This is according to a new report from American Express, which commissioned a YouGov survey showing that businesses and their staff see corporate travel as not only beneficial in commercial terms, but also appealing on a personal level.

It was shown that 76 per cent of the UK business travellers surveyed believe that face-to-face meetings are essential to achieving their company objectives, while 54 per cent said that reducing current levels of business travel would give competitors an advantage.

Moreover, 49 per cent said revenue would decrease if they were unable to take business trips to meet clients, with 36 per cent expecting this to drop by 25 per cent or more, while around half of respondents agreed that prospect conversion would decrease and that their existing customer base would reduce.

The survey also revealed that 71 per cent of British workers believe that business travel makes their job more interesting, with frequent UK business travellers undertaking 11 trips a year on average - six in the UK and five overseas.

When asked to choose the most important corporate travel services, 39 per cent cited airport lounge access, with 36 per cent choosing business class travel and a similar proportion prioritising four or five-star accommodation. Other desired perks included access to a business credit card and staying on a designated hotel club floor for business travellers.

Fabienne Cauli, general manager of the international global client group at American Express Global Commercial Payments, said: "Professionals have told us that business travel is not only an important aspect of the job and a critical part of business growth, it's also one they enjoy and find personally fulfilling."

She added: "The research highlighted that being able to offer travel with work is an important attraction and recruitment tool for businesses, as well as a vital part of overall job satisfaction."
